How does the horse fly trap of Trap’emAll
and the
RapidClean-AirFlux system work

Like all insects that feed on blood, the female horsefly needs the blood of mammals to lay its eggs.
The horsefly determines its best prey according to the temperature of the body.
That’s why their eyes work like thermal cameras.

They do not see like humans; they can only distinguish the different degrees of cold and heat.
Mammals, such as humans, horses and dogs, have about the same body temperature.

The black ball (40 – 65 cm) in the center of the horsefly trap absorbs sunlight and is thus heated.
The horsefly, mainly a visual hunter, must be able to see its prey and attacks the one with the highest temperature.
That’s why he chooses the black ball, rather than the horses or humans near the trap.
In addition, the black ball sways slightly with the wind, making it an even more attractive prey.

When it lands on the black ball, the horsefly stings to feed on blood, but it can not penetrate the thick wall of the balloon.
Then he flies away to find new prey.

Since horseflies can only take off vertically, they enter the funnel-shaped tent.
For most horseflies inside, there is no escape possible because at the top of the tent,
it goes through the ring of the RapidClean-Airflux system.
On this ring, there is a collector jar, from which it is impossible to escape.

The horse traps work without chemicals or liquids

The RapidClean-Airflux system

The RapidClean-Airflux® system was created as the central element of the reinvented horsefly trap.
A ring that supports the collector jar and also from which the funnel-shaped tent and the black balloon are suspended.
The ring is the central axis around which everything has been and will be developed in the future.
For us, efficiency, ease of use and lightness are the key elements of a horse trap.
Of course in this efficiency is paramount for a horse trap.
Intense testing has shown that a fully closed trap system is less effective than a trap allowing secondary airflow upwards.
In combination with the mosquito netting this results in the most effective trap on the planet.
Without a doubt.

The ease of use of the Trap’emAll reinvented trap is impressive. Thanks to the RapidClean-Airflux® system,
it is possible to replace the collector jar in a few seconds when it is full.

Since the RapidClean-Airflux® system is the basis of all Trap’emAll traps, it is possible to update your trap.
If you have the “ECO” model and want a larger model, you can buy a PRO “upgrade pack”.

With the RapidClean-Airflux® system

1. The sun warms the ball
2. The hot air flow goes up.
3. Hot air escapes through the slots in the ring.
4. The hot air flow escapes from the top of the jar.

With another system

1. The sun heats the black ball.
2. The hot air flow goes up.
3. The hot air to flow upwards but can not come out
4. In the collection jar over pressure is created and as a result, a downward flow.

The location of the trap

The location of the trap is the most important element for its effectiveness.

At first, to find the right place to install the trap and get the best results, it is necessary to move the trap several times.
In this context, it is not easy to use a horsefly trap weighing from 10 to 20 kg.
Even less when it comes to drilling in the hard ground, to place the support of the trap.

This is why the Trap’emAll horsefly trap, with its weight of only 4 pounds, is very easy to handle and move.

The importance of the size of the black ball in the effectiveness of horsefly traps

The size of the black ball determines the radius of effectiveness. Not its effectiveness.
After many tests, we have found that there is a minimum size of ball.

A ball less than 40 cm in diameter does not work at all to trap horseflies.
Because of its small size, the small balloon is not perceived as an interesting prey by the horsefly.
This is why small animals, such as cats and small dogs, are not attacked by horseflies.

It’s up to you, but don’t let you fool by producers of the so called “Mini-traps”.
These were developed, as a response to our smallest effective trap. It is even promoted as wasp trap.
It are your dollars, but it probably is the most expensive wasp trap ever.
One thing is for sure, it will not trap a horsefly….

The size of the black balloon has an influence on the effective zone of the trap.
The bigger the black ball, the bigger the zone of effectiveness of the horse fly trap.
The heat emanating from a large black ball is visible from a greater distance than the heat emanating from a smaller ball.
You can compare it to the visibility of a flashlight.

What does “radius of efficiency” mean?

The zones of effectiveness mentioned on this site are applicable to a flat, square plot without obstacles.
The effective zone is when the horsefly trap is installed in the center of the area and it is absolutely necessary for the horsefly to see the trap / black ball.

The zones are:

– ECO trap 1.25 acres
– Trap PRO 2.5 acres

– If the trap is not installed on a flat field / parcel or if the trap is behind bushes / trees / buildings / swimming pool, the radius of effectiveness will be reduced …
– If the trap is installed on one side of a house, the nuisance of horseflies will continue on the other side …
– For optimal protection, depending on the circumstances, it may be necessary to install two or more horsefly traps.

The reasons are still rather vague, but tests have shown that moving the trap 1 to 2 meters can lead to much better results.

  • Horseflies are particularly fond of wet places (ponds, ponds, etc.)
  • When they attack, they appraoch their victims from these places. They hide in moist places…
  • Locate these locations to estimate a trajectory towards the target.
  • Place the Trap’emAll on this path, preferably closer to the places of residence of people or animals (stables, gardens, etc.)
2/3 is the best place to install the trap.
  • Check the trap regularly and empty it when a dark circle is formed at the bottom of the collecting jar.
